What is photography for us?!"I HAVE SEIZED THE LIGHT". With that proud exclamation, in 1839, Louis Jacques Mande Daguerre announced that he had succed in producing the world's first successfull photograph. Less than 50 years later, George Eastman would invent the Kodak camera, making just about evryone a photographer and a picture-maker. Within a remarkable short period of time thereafter, photography would become such an important part of our lives that critic Thomas Lawson could proclaim in truth "photography is the modern world".
But simply, photography has become the most democratic form of art the world has ever known. It has established itself as the universal language, understood by everyone, arguably surpassing eventhe written word as a form of communication.
Almost all of us take pictures. We use our photographs as memories - memories of the rituals and passages in our lives, reminders of our loved ones in erlier times, records of places we have lived or visited. Photography also provides us personally with even more. In our hands , the camera gives us nothing less then one of our most powerful means of self-expression. |
